The Perfect Coffee

“Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love.” That’s the recipe for coffee, according to the utterly French statesman Talleyrand (1754-1838).

Italian Passion shines through at Il Leone

Il Leone has got to be one of my all time top 10 restaurants. Without fail they always impress. I have been there on numerous occasions and every time the experience was bliss. One important thing is to be sure to make a reservation a couple of days in advance, as they’re sure to be full over weekends. On more than one occasion we had late reservations, or larger parties than expected and the friendly hostess always accommodated our requests. On all occasions we had excellent-trained waiters suggesting the perfect meals, and wines to go with. Their seafood pasta is amazing, and so is their Veal Saltimbocca. One thing that’s evident is their passion for their food, and the way in which they describe the meals is proof thereof. My life has also been saved once by their chicken broth with tiny chicken-filled pasta parcels, which i went to pick up after a serious bout of the flu. In short excellent staff, service, atmosphere and food. This is such a comforting thought as one can book a table without any hesitation and know the experience will be a good one.

Modern-day gift from the heavens

If you’re looking for the epiphany of gorgeous & delectable, Manna Epicure is a must. Maranda Engelbrecht’s chic eatery has become synonymous not only with their excellent take on good food but also with their amazing breads, baked fresh daily. The calmness of the white interior is stirred no only by the amazing food but the “Shard Chandeliers”, made by one of the partners add to the whimsical white atmosphere. Manna makes for a quintessential lover’s breakfast, with the highly recommended poached eggs, bacon & roasted vine tomatoes served with rocket on the divine walnut rye. Or even better, salmon & scrambled eggs with avo on coconut bread! However probably my favourite excuse to go to Manna has to be the fact that they make the best Chicken Caesar salad in town. Served in huge wooden salad bowl, and even more perfect washed down with a glass of Haute Cabriere’s Chardonnay Pinot Noir. Perfect for a Friday lunch.

Naughty breakfasts at Cafe Maxim

One Saturday the term “Naughty Breakfast” was coined by my long-time friend and house-mate at the time when we visited a tucked-away cafe in De Waterkant for what was a perfect breakfast of Salmon & Scrambled eggs washed down with a couple of glasses of Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose Champagne. Who needs Therapy? Cafe Maxim is one of the few restaurants in the world serving the renowned Poilane bread. Flown in directly from the Poilane bakery in France, this renowned confection is the base for the Tartines which this terrific cafe serves. Cafe Maxim not only offers patrons a beautiful environment to enjoy a snack, but also boasts a wide collection of jewelery made from semi-precious stones, direct from Bloemfontein (nogals). This hidden gem makes not only the perfect naughty breakfast venue but is also ideal for everything from lunch with the girls to perhaps even a wedding proposal.
